International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
Screenings and a monologue by Alexandros Mavrogiannis

Woman sitting in bar, in underwear, smoking under neon light

Friday November 25, 2022 @8:00pm.

We thought that violence against women is a phenomenon that belongs to the last century.  Unfortunately, we see that violence is increasingly escalating nowadays, both psychologically and physically, for women, despite their efforts for an equal and dignified coexistence with men in a social, political and economic context.

Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations stated that: 'Violence against women is linked to wider issues of power and control in our societies.  We live in a male dominated society.  Women become vulnerable to violence through the multiple ways in which we keep them unequal.'

On this topic the following videos will be shown, written and directed by Alexandros Mavrogiannis:

  • "Μy man"
  • "West"
  • "ashtray"
and also his theatrical monologue:
  • "mother knows best"

After the screening of the videos and the monologue, there will be a discussion with the audience.   See also here...

In addition, the solo photography exhibition "Touch Me" by Susan Daboll continues, Thursday to Saturday, 5:00pm to 8:00pm.

  • "ashtray"

The Castro

The Castro: Open Call - Abstract color design

Opening : Tuesday July 6, 2021 @ 6:30pm.

Duration & Hours : July 6 - 17, 2021
Wednesday - Saturday @ 6:30pm. - 9:30pm.

FokiaNou Art Space is pleased to present The Castro, a group show curated by Mary Cox and Panagiotis Voulgaris, for which participating artists responded to an open call.  The exhibition title refers to the famous San Francisco district that since the 1960s has become one of the most well-known centers of LGBT activism and culture in the world.  The title's double meaning is the antithesis of a free environment, that of a traditional castle as a walled-in, exclusive and restrictive institution.

Artists were asked to play with the word castro, and its double meaning, presenting the bright and open castle of freedom, acceptance and equality, as well as the dark and enclosed castle of racism, homophobia and violence. The show comprises a wide variety of media: drawing, painting, photography, video and sculpture.

Participating artists: Sofia Archangelou, Dimitrios-Claudio Bantourakis, Sebastian Boulter and Taija Goldblatt, Stelios Dexis and Myrto Vounatsou, Andromachi Giannopoulou, Marietta Kallona, Vasiliki Kanellou, Christos Katsinis, Kalliopi Kouklinou, Kelly Koumarianou, Andreas Lyberatos, Alexandros Mavrogiannis, Gioula Papadopoulou, Dina Skapetoylia, Christina-Sylvia Simantira, Maaike Stutterheim, Zari Nikolov, Maria Bourbou, Eva Gkilntirim, Geeta Roopnarine, Stella Sevastopoulos, Marios Trichas, Panagiotis Voulgaris, Grigoria Vryttia.

Curated by Mary Cox and Panagiotis Voulgaris.

Masks and social distancing are required in all areas of the space, including the roof terrace, halls and elevator.

The deadline for submission is June 14, 2021.  Work can be in any medium, keeping in mind the space limitations of the venue.  Video work will be shown on tablets on the wall.  Artists should send proposals for up to 3 works, in JPEG 1-4MB.

Please send your submission to fokianouartspace@gmail.com, stating title, medium, size and date, and a short bio of 100 words or less (not a CV), as well as a website if you have one.  The artist has the responsibility to deliver and retrieve the work, with no cost to FokiaNou Art Space.

Submission is free, if however, your work is selected, there will be a € 20 participation fee, to be paid when delivering the work.

Death in Athens
A festival of artist-run spaces

Death in Athens - Row of Abstract Gray Paintings

Opening : Friday March 13, 2020 @ 7:00pm. - 11:00pm.

Duration & Hours : Saturday March 14, 2020 @ 2:00pm. - 8:00pm.
Sunday March 15, 2020 @ 2:00pm. - 7:00pm.

Closing Party : Sunday March 15, 2020 @ 8:00pm. - 12:00pm.

Athens ArtCore is a recently-formed association of artist-run spaces in Athens, with the goals of creating a network of support, advocacy, and collaboration, as well as raising the visibility of the value of these types of independent spaces.  In recent years Athens has seen a proliferation of alternative art spaces, joining the global trend toward artist-run, non-commercial initiatives, which provide an arena for experimentation and innovation in the art scene that traditional galleries cannot.  In its first event, Athens ArtCore invites the public to a 3-day festival, to take place 13-15 March 2020, in which each space/platform will independently host a project under the common aegis of Athens ArtCore.

The festival's title, "Death in Athens", refers to Thomas Mann's classic "Death in Venice", and its themes of inspiration, creation, and the distinct relationship of the creative process to city and location.  The novel also addresses the Platonic theory of forms and how its legacy in Western traditions of art-making furnish disjunctures of idea and form, of signifier and signified.  Death in Athens prods these themes for their specific resonance within the Greek capital today.  Each participating platform will address these themes with its own curatorial project.

The full program of exhibitions and special events can be found at athensartcore.wixsite.com/deathinathens and facebook.com/AthensArtCore.

As part of the festival, we present FokiaNou Art Space at Studio 80A: A collaborative curatorial between Fokianou directors Mary Cox and Panagiotis Voulgaris with Sarah Ettlinger at her studio at 80A Zoodochou Pigis, Exarcheia.

Participating artists: Maria Bourbou, Mary Cox, Yiannis Christakos, Irini Diadou, Sarah Ettlinger, Lillian Lykiardopoulou, Christina Papas, Panagiotis Voulgaris.

In addition FokiaNou Art Space (Pagrati) will be open Friday and Saturday 5:00pm. - 8:00pm. with a solo show of Maria Bourbou.

Death in Athens

Ο τίτλος του φεστιβάλ, "Death in Athens", αναφέρεται στο κλασικό έργο του Thomas Mann "Death in Venice" και τα θέματα της έμπνευσης, της δημιουργίας και της ξεχωριστής σχέσης της δημιουργικής διαδικασίας με την πόλη και τον τόπο.

Cryptids
Talk & Walk with Karl Heinz Jeron

Cryptids - Art show: Sculpture of concrete landscape, sound, video

Saturday November 23, 2019 @6:00pm.

On the last day of his show, "Cryptids", artist Karl Heinz Jeron will discuss his intriguing work and conduct a short participatory eWalk (jeron.org/ewalks.)   Don't miss this chance to find out what motivates him and how he works!

eWalks is a form of psychogeography, a type of conscious wandering developed by Guy Debord and the Situationist International.  Psychogeography attempts to reveal the 'real city' underneath what Debord called The Spectacle, which can be generally described as the flashy and seductive commodification of ideas.

Talk will begin at 6:00pm., on Saturday November 23.   Walk to follow.

Microcollection: Art sowing on demand

Saturday February 9, 2019 @5:00pm. at the entrance of FokiaNou Art Space

During her visit to the Venice Biennale in 1990, Elisa Bollazzi collected some small pieces of Anish Kapoor's work that had accidentally fallen on the floor.  This incident was the flashpoint for a new project: an extensive collection of artworks, comprised of seemingly insignificant and small pieces of installations and larger works that might otherwise be lost.  These are now housed in the Microcollection Museum, where they are registered and can be seen under a microscope during their presentation.  Fluxus, Pop Art and Arte Povera, with artists such as Joseph Beuys, Daniel Buren, Tony Cragg and Richard Long, as well as important Italian artists such as Alberto Burri, Piero Gilardi and Giuseppe Penone are represented in the collection.  Fragments from the installation "The Year Of Hibernation II" by Panagiotis Voulgaris were recently added to the Microcollection.

In 2008 Elisa Bollazzi launched "Art Sowings" in which small pieces of larger works are sent to various parts of the world, to be planted in the soil, under trees, pots, pavements, gardens and parks.  Athens is the next city to welcome this particular sowing, when a fragment from "Albero di 7metri", a work by Giuseppe Penone, will be planted at the entrance to the apartment building housing FokiaNou Art Space.  We hope to see you there.

Art sowing on demand: Albero di 7 metri, 1980 – 82, Giuseppe Penone

Στην συλλογή της ανάμεσα σε άλλα, αντιπροσωπεύεται η εννοιολογική τέχνη, το Fluxus, η Pop Art και η Arte Povera με καλλιτέχνες όπως ο Joseph Beuys, o Daniel Buren, Tony Cragg και ο Richard Long καθώς και σημαντικοί Ιταλοί δημιουργοί όπως ο Alberto Burri, ο Piero Gilardi και ο Giuseppe Penone. Σπαράγματα από την εγκατάσταση "The Year Of Hibernation II" του Παναγιώτη Βούλγαρη αποτελούν την πρόσφατη προσθήκη της Microcollection.

Art and Emotions: Old Paradigms and New Philosophical Theories

Perspectives: Athens in Transition: Art Show

Lecture/Discussion by Marcos Breuer

Wednesday December 13, 2017 @7:00 - 8:30pm

The presentation will be in English

Athens-based philosopher Marcos Breuer invites you to discover key philosophical dimensions underlying the work of art.  At the same time the event offers a great opportunity to see the current exhibition, "Perspectives: Athens in Transition."

According to the Western tradition, the essential aspect of human beings is rationality, not their capacity to feel deep, intense or complex emotions.  Nevertheless, in recent decades philosophy has paid more attention to our emotions and the role they play in the constitution of moral and aesthetic judgments.  As a consequence, the old rationalistic paradigm has lost its centrality, allowing the development of new conceptions based on our emotional activity.  But what are emotions?  How can we classify our various emotional states?  And which functions do they have in the production of a work of art – and in its perception and appreciation?

At the upcoming meeting we are going to explore some of the new research trends on emotions.

Marcos Breuer bio

Marcos G. Breuer was born in Santa Fe (Argentina) and studied Philosophy at the University of Córdoba; soon afterwards he worked as a consultant in the public sector for two years. In 2001, he obtained a fellowship to do his doctorate in Philosophy at the University of Düsseldorf, Germany. After having completed his PhD, he moved to Rome in 2006. There he worked as a teacher and conducted post-doctoral research. Since 2009 he works as an independent philosopher based in Athens.

Breuer has just finished a book reconstructing the ethical debate on the legalization of voluntary euthanasia and is currently working on a project exploring the multifarious relationship between philosophical and fictional discourse, concentrating on the work of authors such as J. L. Borges. He regularly organizes lectures and courses in philosophy and literature; his main areas of interest are the history of philosophy, ethics, and the relation between philosophy and literature.

From Tragedy to Zarathustrian Laughter:  Nietzsche on the Nature of Art

Defiance and Tolerance: Grey Light Paintings : Art Show

Lecture/Discussion by Marcos Breuer

Friday May 26, 2017 @7:00 - 8:30pm

The presentation will be in English

Athens-based philosopher Marcos Breuer invites us to discover the philosophical dimensions underlying the work of art.

In his first book, The Birth of Tragedy, Nietzsche advocates the return to a “tragic culture”, following his reflections on the ancient cult of Dionysos, the origin of Greek tragedy, and the later evolution of Western societies up to the 19th century.  Some years later, however, Nietzsche starts developing a new point of view: the revitalization of Western culture can only take place through the emergence of a new kind of human being, able to playfully and freely create the goals and values that will govern his or her existence.  Thus, from a pessimistic world view Nietzsche ends up adopting an affirmative philosophy.  As a consequence, the boundaries between artistic creation and authentic living tend to blur.

At our coming meeting at Fo Kia Nou 24/7, the philosopher Marcos Breuer will present Nietzsche's aesthetics and discuss its relevance to the contemporary artistic field.

What is the Meaning of a Work of Art?  Postmodernism on Interpretation

Nearer To Closer : Philosophy Meets Art

Lecture/Discussion by Marcos Breuer

Friday April 7, 2017 @7:00 - 8:30pm

The presentation will be in English

Athens-based philosopher Marcos Breuer invites us to discover the philosophical dimensions underlying the work of art.

According to a traditional view, a work of art carries a given “meaning” inside it.  If the work is satisfactory and the public is sufficiently informed, then the meaning will “flow” to the recipient and be thus apprehended by the listener or observer.  There is consequently one correct interpretation of the work of art.  However, with the emergence of postmodern thought, that view has been broadly criticized.  Postmodernism does not only imply a criticism to the traditional categories of “creator”, “work of art” and “public”, it also encourages the research on interpretation as a complex cognitive process of perceiving and deciphering the aesthetic object.  But what is exactly the postmodern approach to interpretation, and which are the differences between that and classical theories? How do we come to interpret symbols?  And which are the criteria to distinguish a good from a bad interpretation?

At our coming meeting at Fo Kia Nou 24/7, the philosopher Marcos Breuer will address these issues, sketching out some of the answers proposed by major scholars of postmodernism like Umberto Eco.  On the occasion of the exhibition “Nearer to Closer” by Dean Manning and Kiveli Zachariou, the participants will have the opportunity to dialog and reflect on meaning and interpretation, some of the most fascinating topics of philosophy of art.

"Philosophy Meets Art" Lecture/Discussion

A Picture of Us: Philosophy Meets Art

Lecture/Discussion by Marcos Breuer

Friday March 10, 2017 @6:30 - 8:00pm

The presentation will be in English

Athens-based philosopher Marcos Breuer invites us to discover the philosophical dimensions underlying the work of art.

The arts have always been relevant for philosophers; indeed, there is a branch of philosophy entirely devoted to artistic phenomena: aesthetics or philosophy of art.  Likewise, the various philosophical ideas and systems have been of interest to artists.  In fact, many of them have understood their works as an exploration of the aesthetic dimensions of a given philosophical theory, to paraphrase J. L. Borges.  Nevertheless, the relationship between philosophy and art is far from being idyllic.  Plato, for example, wanted to expel the artists from his republic because they (supposedly) deceive and mislead us; in turn, many Romantics saw in rational thinking a threat to aesthetic creation.

But in any case philosophy and art offer us two different and complementary ways of approaching the many aspects of the world, both the natural and the social world.  We relate to things through philosophical analysis and through aesthetic experience.

As a special event at Fo Kia Nou 24/7, the philosopher Marcos Breuer will discuss the specific features of a philosophical and of an artistic approach.  On the occasion of the exhibition “A Picture of Us” by Sarah Ettlinger and Loula Levedi, he will focus on the body as a major subject of reflection by philosophers and artists alike.

Works on paper with Blanka

Workshop by Blanka Amezkua

Friday January 20, 2017 @3:00pm - 5:00pm

The session will be in Greek and/or English, as needed

"...The many qualities of the circle—the constant relationship between centre and the never-ending, continuous circumference—make it a highly fascinating, obsessive form, one which can refer at one and the same time to the cyclical passage of time, the movement of heavenly bodies and of the cosmos, the limit of the void, emptiness or completeness...."
Mark Verstockt, From Chaos to Geometry: The Genesis of Form

In this recent body of work, I rediscovered the nobleness of working with paper all over again, through the use of simple forms, primarily the circle.  I found that in its apparent simplicity lies an infinite world yet to be unfolded.  And the door seems to be opening for loads of new unrestrained and creative possibilities for me.

I want to invite you to participate in a FREE workshop at Fo Kia Nou 24/7, where I will guide you in the creation of a work on paper, in the style of the piece included in the show; while at the same time, sharing a bit of how this work came to be.

Spaces are limited, please email us if you are interested: Mary Cox / Panos Voulgaris email: info@fokianou247.gr

Everyone is welcome!

"Flyers in Athens..."

Flyers posted in Car

Project & Actions by Charles Beronio & Blanka Amezkua

Various days, 2016

Four slogans and mottos printed in English and Greek on four different colored papers, 100 total, 25 each color, 2016

  • FuchsiaDiffuse Capital
  • GreenHedge Values
  • YellowRecall History
  • BlueFree Money

Charles Beronio, aka @surfaceisdepth sent flyers from New York City, via Fedex, to Blanka Amezkua in Athens, Greece.  Blanka posted the flyers spontaneously on walls and objects along pedestrian routes near her residence as a farewell to Athens, just days before moving back to New York City.

The flyers project will continue with other participants in Las Vegas, New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

Charles Eladio Beronio was born in 1968, a few blocks from the New York Stock Exchange in lower Manhattan.  He studied sculpture, writing, and visual criticism at California College of the Arts and participated in the Artist in the Marketplace program at the Bronx Museum of the Arts.  Charles' work focuses on text and language; forming a fictional narrative steeped in capital and spectacle, as well as an ongoing series of redactive drawings on printed images gathered from mass media sources.  His work has been published by Printed Matter, Inc. and Let's Panic and is included in the collections of the New York Public Library, the Brooklyn Museum, Artists Space, as well as Kit Hinrichs' Stars and Stripes collection of historic American flags and Johan Kugelberg/Boo-Hooray's collection of ephemera and book arts.  He appeared in Brooklyn D.I.Y., a film documentary about artists directed by Marcin Ramocki.  He also occasionally curates exhibitions and writes about art and artists.  Charles lives in New York City, but hopes to one day embark from America for a new land.

Workshop by Marietta Kallona (Wind Within)

Workshop - Wind Within
Workshop: Thursday December 4, 2014, 17:00 - 19:00

Wind Within is coming to a close and we would like to thank all of you who came by.  A special thank you to all of those who supported a local artisan by buying one of his beautiful wooden seagulls.

To complement the seagulls handcrafted by Napoleon Tzanetos we will close the exhibition with another artisan craft - that of traditional paperfolding in Japan.  In Japanese the word for artisan is "takumi".  When it is written with different ideograms it also means "skillful" or "beauty".

We would like to invite you to come and make your own origami bird on Thursday, December 4th from 5 - 7 pm, with beautiful origami paper from Japan.  Workshop is organized and will be given by artist Marietta Kallona.

Female Artists

Female Artists

A series of classes by Jana Tziveleki
Every Wednesday 18:00 - 20:00

Donation € 5 / class
if you are interested please contact janatzivel@yahoo.gr or ph. 697.186.8775
the classes will be in Greek

We begin Wednesday, November 19, with Mexican artist Frida Kahlo...

Is there “female art”?
Does a female artist create in a different way than a man?
Why is it so difficult for female artists to be recognized internationally?

Along with the exhibition Wind Within [ο μέσα άνεμος] that takes place at Fo Kia Nou 24/7 until December 5th, the curator of the show and artist Jana Tziveleki starts a series of classes of becoming familiar with important female artists that influenced the evolution of art but were recognized late [or not at all] by the official art history.  The approach to their work is held through the gathering of information, biography data, images of their work, discussion and references of their personal and artistic influences.

Υπάρχει «γυναικεία τέχνη»;
Δημιουργεί διαφορετικά μια γυναίκα καλλιτέχνης από έναν άντρα;
Γιατί υπάρχει τόση μεγάλη δυσκολία στην αναγνώριση των γυναικών καλλιτεχνών;
