John Bicknell Defiance and Tolerance: Grey Light Paintings
Fo Kia Nou 24/7 Contemporary Art Space is pleased to present "Defiance and Tolerance: Grey Light Paintings" by John Bicknell.
In John Bicknell's pale grey paintings, the themes of doubt, failure, faith and paradise are addressed through absurd actions and moments of personal or collective political drama. The narratives derive from observed scenarios, cultural archetypes, news stories and photographs of conflict. Each story is a reflection of human folly, tragedy, and mortality. The underlying gravity and doubt is elevated through dark humour, pointing the way to redemption through failure and resilience.
The absence of colour emphasises the linear image. The image serves the painting, rather than the painting serving the image. Each simple drawn image takes on its own life and logic. The images emerge from a densely worked, excavated surface, over time, which belies the apparent simplicity and facility of the linear image. This reciprocality of density and lightness, of depth and surface, creates a tension which mirrors human contradiction and conflict.
John Bicknell was born in Surrey, UK and lives and works in Athens. He studied at West Surrey School of Art and Design, University of East London and the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London, where he was awarded the Slade Prize and the Boise travelling scholarship to Italy. He has exhibited widely in Europe and been a recipient of the Henry Moore Foundation Fellowship, The South Bank Prize, London and the John Moores Prize, Liverpool.

Στους πίνακες τού John Bicknell σε απαλό γκρί χρώμα, διευρευνώνται η αμφιβολία, η αποτυχία, και ο παράδεισος, μέσα από παράλογες ενέργειες και στιγμές, προσωπικού ή συλλογικού πολιτικού δράματος. Οι αφηγήσεις των έργων προέρχονται από ειδωμένα σενάρια, πολιτιστικά αρχέτυπα, ιστορίες από τις ειδήσεις και φωτογραφίες από συγκρούσεις. Κάθε ιστορία είναι μια αντανάκλαση της ανθρώπινης τρέλλας, τραγωδίας και θνητότητας. Η βαρύτητα και η αμφιβολία ανυψώνονται μέσα από το σκοτεινό χιούμορ, δείχνοντας τον δρόμο προς την λύτρωση μέσα από την αποτυχία και την ανθεκτικότητα.
Η απουσία χρώματος δίνει έμφαση στη γραμμική εικόνα. Η εικόνα εξυπηρετεί τη ζωγραφική, αντί η ζωγραφική να εξυπηρετεί την εικόνα. Κάθε απλή εικόνα αποκτά τη δική της ζωή και λογική. Οι εικόνες αναδύονται μέσα από μια σκαμένη επιφάνεια πυκνά επεξεργασμένη μέσα στο χρόνο, που αναιρεί τη φαινομενική απλότητα και ευκολία της γραμμικής εικόνας. Αυτή η αμοιβαιότητα πυκνότητας και ελαφρότητας, βάθους και επιφάνειας, δημιουργεί μια ένταση που αντικατοπτρίζει τις ανθρώπινες αντιφάσεις και τις συγκρούσεις.
Ο John Bicknell που γεννήθηκε στο Surrey της Αγγλίας ζει και εργάζεται στην Αθήνα. Σπούδασε στο West Surrey School of Art and Design, στο East London University και στο Slade School of Fine Art, University College London, όπου του απονεμήθηκε το βραβείο Slade και η υποτροφία Boise στην Ιταλία. Έχει εκθέσει ευρέως στην Ευρώπη και έλαβε βραβεία όπως το Henry Moore Foundation Fellowship, το South Bank Prize στο Λονδίνο και το βραβείο John Moores στο Λίβερπουλ.
